RLO: Referencing your work using Harvard: Direct quotes.
Direct quotes. This panel shows you how to reference a direct quotation. It should be used in conjunction with the guidelines demonstrated in the referencing tool for the appropriate referencing types used. Do not confuse quotations with citations. A citation is the practice of referring to the work of other authors in the text of your assignments.
Quotations more than two lines long. separate it from the rest of the paragraph by one free line above and below. indent at left and right margins. it may be in a smaller point size. it is preceded by a colon. it does not use quotation marks. the citation includes author, date and page number(s).
There are other referencing systems that are used, such as footnotes(1) (at the end of a page) and endnotes (at the end of a chapter), but, overall, the Harvard system is the most popular amongst academics; some say this is because the system actually incorporates references to the source material in the text and thus they are more easily read in context with the sourced material.
Introduction. The focus and purpose of this essay is to provide a short and concentrated introduction to the concept of Harvard Referencing and the reasons behind its significance. Furthermore, the essay will also acutely demonstrate how the Harvard referencing system is best integrated in report form.
Harvard is a style of referencing, primarily used by university students, to cite information sources. Two types of citations are included: In-text citations are used when directly quoting or paraphrasing a source. They are located in the body of the work and contain a fragment of the full citation.
How do I reference quotes and ideas? If you are using someone else's words, the words must be indented or in quotation marks. These actions show that you are not claiming the work is your own. You must also provide a reference to show where the words came from, to help the reader find the source. See Direct quotes for more information.
Two of the most well-known and commonly used referencing methods are Oxford and Harvard referencing. These are the systems you are most likely to be asked to use for an essay or thesis and also the most widely recognised, so it is advisable to use one of these if you are choosing your own reference system.
Where you include any images in your essay, thesis or work, you can describe them as figures. You will need to include them in reference. Figures need to be numbered e.g. Figure 1. or Fig.1 or Figs. 1,2,3. and captioned (described), place caption directly under the image. Number all Figures in the order they first appear in the text.
Citing in-text using the Harvard referencing system. You may wish to refer to an author’s idea, model or dataset but have not been able to read the actual chapter containing the information, but only another author’s discussion or report of it.
I am in the process of finishing my esssay, and one issue that is annoying me is that I am happy with my current essay. It falls within the word limit as well as it being written the way I wanted it to be. However, I am slightly worried about the harvard system of referencing.
